How to use gas
Before moving in, contact your local gas company and let them know when you are moving in. The company will send someone to open the gas valve and inspect it.
When you move out, notify the gas company in advance and give them your customer number (printed on your receipts or inspection paper). The service person will visit your home, cut off the gas service, and adjust the fee.
Gas types and appliances
Different types of gas are supplied to different areas. The types of gas available are shown on a sticker in the kitchen or on the inspection paper. Gas appliances should match the types of gas available. If not, that would cause imperfect combustion and it is extremely dangerous.
When you use appliances in current use in other areas, make sure of the type of gas it uses. If it doesn’t match, ask the gas company to adjust the appliances.
Check the gas flame by sight when you turn it on/ off.
- Make sure that the flame is on /out when you turn it on /off.
- Do not leave flammable materials near the gas appliances.
- Do not leave while you are cooking with propane gas. It is extremely dangerous if the cooking oil in the pan catches fire when you fry tempura or if the gas flame is put out by the wind or by a pot that boils over.
Be sure to use an extractor fan
- When you use the gas appliances inside, ventilate the room with an extractor fan or by opening the windows from time to time.
- Do not use a small-sized water heater for a long period of time.
*Propane gas needs a lot of oxygen to burn. If the ventilation is not sufficient, the room may be filled with exhaust gas fumes because of a lack of oxygen, which can be fatal.
Check the flame color
Always make sure that the gas flame is blue. It means it is burning properly. The reddish flame means imperfect combustion.
When you notice the unusual gas conditions:
It is absolutely dangerous if you use gas improperly.
If you smell gas, please remain calm and do the following:
- Open all windows and doors. City gas diffuses into the air when it is released because it is lighter than air. Propane gas sinks to the floor because it is heavier than air, so you need to get out of the
room.
- Shut off the gas valve to the appliance and the meter valve.
- Call your local gas company.
- Do not turn any electrical appliance switches on or off. A gas detector may be leased. The device gives off a warning sound and lights when it detects a gas leakage.
How to pay gas bills
A gas bill is a total of the basic rate and the amount of use. The bill is sent every month. The basic rate is fixed for some kinds of gas. The gas company inspects the meter every month and calculates the amount of the bill. Payment is done by withdrawing from a deposit account or by paying at a bank, a post office or a convenience store. The form is sent with the bill.
